Chance

Our Roosters

Chance is an Australorp and Lucky is a Brahma mix. They survived the rooster lottery after we hatched some eggs. Lucky because he is very large, quiet, and watchful, sticking close to the hens. And Chance because he is very active, feisty and vocal in his patrols. Together they provide excellent protection for their hens. They have never been aggressive towards each other or to us.

Our Hens

After trying a couple of monogamous flocks with your basic brown chicken we decided what we "really" needed was to have a little more variety and splashes of color. We currently have a mixed flock consisting of Ameraucana's (in black, brown, grey, white & red), Australorps, Buff Orpington's, Black and Gold laced Wyandotte's, Brahma's and a couple Olive Eggers for good measure. We wanted a flock that was winter hardy, easy going, and were at least moderate egg layers. Our hens have a large insulated coop with attached covered run that provides outdoor space with shade in the summer and protection from the wind and snow in the winter. There is fencing surrounding the coop & run providing an additional protected but uncovered space where they spend most mornings from Spring to Fall. In the afternoon after laying their eggs they free range on about 2 out of our 5 acres.

Leonidas "Leo"

With chickens come rodents. And lots of them. Leonidas in Greek means "son of a lion", we needed to give him a strong name if he was to be a great hunter! Leo primarily hangs out in the coop and attached run where just his very presence has seen a dramatic decrease in unwanted visitors. Visions of his nighttime capers are left to be found in the mornings.
